Starting out
This discussion will take place online and in Berlin. To get the discussion started, I am posting some thoughts I had while taking a course on the economic crisis with David Harvey last semester. I would like to invite those who took the course with me to do the same.
Some categories to consider:
currency (Bretton Woods, neutral currency, speculative currency, floating currency, what happens when a currency crashes)
constant crises of capitalism (crises shift geographically, but never disappear)
capitalists/capitalist class, workers/working class (how does one act in class interest? how does an individual fit into one or multiple classes?)
creation of unemployment
is it possible to have a sustainable and local capitalism?
To those new to the blog (everyone, that is): these are some suggestions for discussion topics. Please post more suggestions for discussion, or questions you have about the texts/course, or your responses from class.
Let’s start by talking about David Harvey’s new text that we discussed in class, the chapters on the economic crisis from his upcoming book.
Starting in October 2009, we will have real world Berlin meetings to discuss this work or Harvey’s previous work. I’m personally interested in starting a reading group for The New Imperialism and/or A Brief History of Neoliberalism.
Mechanics - Two options to submit: comment on a blog post, or emai your response to harveydiscussion@gmail.com and I’ll put it up as a blog post.
